Deleteing E-mail

When using Outlook Express as an e-mail editor in connection with my
university e-mail account, e-mails that were deleted in Outlook Express were
deleted in the university account as well. Since using Outlook, this does
not happen. I am required to access my university account separately and
purge deleted e-mails. Is this inherent in Outlook or is this due to the way
my account is configured?
 
It's an inherent difference in the way Outlook Express and Outlook work with
IMAP4 accounts. Guess which one everyone likes better?
