DURING OPERATION OF MY OTHER COMPUTER A BUG WAS CAUGHT BY SPYWARE AND THE
ROOT DIRECTORY WAS DELETED. WHEN I TRY TO REPAIR WITH THE DISK IT ASKS FOR A
ADMIN PASS WORD. IT WILL NOT ACCEPT THE OLD ONE. IT DOES LET ME LOOK
THROUGH THE FILES IF I HIT ENTER AS IT GOES TO THE COMMAND PROMPT. THE
RECOVERY DISCS HAVE BEEN LOST. WHAT TO DO?

Sorry, but that's simply not possible, short of formatting the hard
drive. Please repost with a more accurate description of what happened,
and which specific files and/or folders are missing.

WHEN I TRY TO REPAIR WITH THE DISK IT ASKS FOR A
ADMIN PASS WORD. IT WILL NOT ACCEPT THE OLD ONE.

The password being requested is that of the built-in
_Administrator_ account, not the password for any other administrative
user accounts that the computer's owner may have created. Unless the
owner deliberately set the Administrator's password via the Management
Console (_not_ the Control Panel), it's probably still blank. WinXP Pro
asks the installer to set the Administrator's password during
installation, but WinXP Home doesn't.

Also, Linux-based password cracking utilities abound on the
Internet, freely available to anyone who can use Google.

IT DOES LET ME LOOK
THROUGH THE FILES IF I HIT ENTER AS IT GOES TO THE COMMAND PROMPT.

Which demonstrates that the Aministrator password was still blank. You
are now in the Recovery Console. You should now be able to replace any
missing files. There should be an \i386 folder on the hard drive
containing most of the necessary OS files.

RECOVERY DISCS HAVE BEEN LOST. WHAT TO DO?

Contacting the manufacturer of the computer to obtain replacement
Recovery CDs would seem the the next step, to me.

Also, please unstick your CapsLock key. Posting in all caps, as
you have done, is the Usenet equivalent of shouting, and is considered
very rude by a large number of people. More importantly, posting in all
caps makes the post harder to read, further reducing your chances of
getting help; a great many people won't even try to read such a message.
If you really want help, simply comply with the dictates of common
courtesy and the conventions of the milieu.
