Deleted my wife's email and folders

Hi, I was trying to clear out spyware and pop-ups by
deleting files in all kinds of places and I accidently
caused my wife to lose her Outlook Express customized
folders (I can't get her to switch to Outlook) and
deleted her emails in inbox, deleted, sent, etc.
folders. How can I recover these? I already emptied the
recycle bin and there aren't any restore points
available. Also, how do I make my computer automatically
create restore points?

Hi

If those OE folders have been deleted, then they have gone - unless a 3rd
party program can help:

http://aumha.org/freeware.php#restore
http://www.execsoft.com/undelete/undelete.asp

SR automatically creates a system checkpoint every 24 hours, by default.
Anything other than that needs a Registry 'tweak'.

Deleting an item from the Recycle Bin permanently removes it from your computer.
Items deleted from the Recycle Bin, in all likelihood, cannot be restored.

System Restore is designed to restore Windows XP system files,
not any personal files, documents or email messages.

You can try the following, but there are no guarantees of success:

Search and Recover is a powerful arsenal of tools designed to instantly
recover deleted, destroyed, and damaged items from your PC. Such items
include files, folders, songs, pictures, videos, programs, critical system
components, web pages, and even e-mail messages. Search and Recover
works with any drive (hard or floppy of any size and format), and can even
recover deleted photos, songs, and more from digital cameras, MP3 players,
USB flash drives, and other digital devices.

You 'accidentally' deleted all her email folders and then cleared the
recycle bin? I hope your wife loves you for more than your computer skills,
because those folders are gone.

To remove adware and spyware you need specialized software. Here is one good
example (there are many others): Ad-aware 6 by Lavasoft
www.lavasoftusa.com

Windows XP automatically creates restore points at regular intervals.

Ok, well, we will see where her love falls. I use Spybot
Search and Destroy and McAfee searches for spyware also.
I used to use Adware. Neither are particularly
effective. I had pop-ups while I have been typing this
after using Spybot and McAfee.

Why didn't I have any restore points to use when I
checked?

Restore points can become corrupted, usually due to viruses. When this
happens, all restore points become unusable, inwhich case you have to erase
them and start fresh. [To do this, turn off system restore on all drives,
reboot, turn on system restore and manually create a restore point.]

I have used Ad-aware (version 6) and Spybot S & D. Both are highly
effective. Don't know about McAfee. Norton AntiVirus is now looking for
spyware/adware/etc. but it take them a while to catch up with the
established programs. However, no software, no matter how well written, can
protect a computer from users who do not 'think before they click.'

The more important question is, how are you going to make it up to
her? You'd better get cracking--do housework; smile all th time;
practice hourly random acts of kindness; tke care of the kids; buy her
gifts; and never, never complain. This must continue for at least six
months. It will take her that long to recover from the damage you
have done. ;-)
