Deleted items will not reset

A user is having problems that when he deletes all items in his deleted items
folder, the count is not reset to 0. it still shows (xxx) in blue as to his
items. Yet there are no emails in that folder. Is there some temporary file
that needs to be deleted? Thanks for any help in this matter!
