Deleted items really gone?

XP, Outlook 2003 not on exchange. Helping someone try and recover their
deleted items. This is what happened on their machine. They ran Mailbox
cleanup, found files over a certain date, deleted them and then deleted from
deleted items.

We have searched and found the suggestion to corrupt .pst file. We did that
with a hex editor, and we then we ran scanpst.exe. None of the e-mails were
found. Downloaded a third party program. Ran it and it also found nothing.
Any other suggestions. Are they really gone??

It depends on whether you actually deleted from deleted items folder or if
you emptied deleted items. If you go to your deleted items folder, then
click Tools, you should see an option to Recover Deleted Items if you only
emptied your Deleted Items folder, click that and it should bring back all
deleted items.

AFAIK that only works with Exchange, which the OP says he's not using...
