I cannot empty the deleted items folder. I've tried going under edit, I've
tried highlighting all of the e-mails to delete, nothing will work. It will
only delete 1 at a time.

Try dragging them to Junk Mail.

I had this problem about 3 weeks ago. I tried to change over to Windows Live
Mail and there was a problem changing over. I could not receive my mail.
For 1 1/2 weeks I used my IP webmail, but that became a pain. I then
uninstalled Windows Live Mail (my IP provider told me that Windows Live Mail
is still in beta, so there are alot more gliches.) When I uninstalled Windows
Live it gave me Windows Mail back.
I reentered my account info. and it was running okay. I still had 3,000
e-mails in my deleted file that I could not delete. I read somewhere in one
on these posted messages that you could delete one at a time, so I found what
they were talking about and started deleting one at a time. I had deleted
around 50 e-mails when all of a sudden a window popped up saying it was
deleting messages. When it got through it had deleted half of the 3,000. So
I again started deleting one by one, and after 10 messages the window popped
up again and started deleting. That time it deleted all of them. That has
been 3 days ago and I can now delete from my deleted messages again the old
way.

Get and install this fix:
Messages may be stuck in the Outbox when you use Windows Mail on a computer
that is running Windows Vista
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941090
It works on other folders, too.

ok, that might work...
Downloaded and ran the patch.
but would not bulk delete(empty) the contents of the deleted folder.

so.. highlighted top message there. then del(key), Enter(key)... until
empty...
Went pretty quick...

Then new mail came in... deleted a bunch (to the folder).
quit and re-entered mail. Still had emails in the folder.
Right click on folder, Delete contents... now they go...
Seems more like corrupted email stuck, but maybe that download fixed it
somewhat...

Have you checked the option to empty the Deleted Items folder when WinMail
is closed. If you haven't checked that option then of course they're still
in Deleted Items when you reopen WinMail.

Yes, that was one of the first things I checked....

hmm... ok, well it is not checked now...

Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance. First checkbox is unchecked.

"Empty messages from the 'Deleted Items' folder on exit"...

Testing now... Exiting mail, restarting mail.. Yes, they are gone.

This fixed it...

Thank you very much! :)

Just encountered similar problem. Patch didn't make any difference. Following
your method I clicked on the top message then scrolled down to the last in
the folder, held down my shift key and clicked on that. All the messages were
selected. Hit the Delete key and... whoosh! One empty Deleted Items folder.
Thanks for the tip!

Hello. Same here: the patc did not help. Deleting one by one helped some but
refuses to delete messages already "void". Dragging to the spam folder took
care of all of the mesages, but one. Further help would be appeciated.

Did you try both the 32-bit version and the 64-bit version of the patch?
If you try the wrong one for your version of Windows, it will just refuse
to install.
