Deleted Files still there

B

Brian

I have a 120GB disk partitioned in to 3 drives with the
key one being some 70 GB in size.

I am running XP Home and only use this drive for making
video files using Ulead VideoStudio 8. I seem to have a
problem deleting old files.

The properties at the Disk level show that I have a 70GB
disk with less than 1gb spare. If I check the few folders
on the disk the sum total of the folders and files is
only about 30gb. I have done all the file deletions from
Windows Explorer rather than the Ulead program.

I have enabled the showing of hidden folders and system
folders but cannot find anywhere that shows the missing
40gb.

I have used all the functions available and cleared the
recycle bin and all temp files etc. I have also defragged
the disk but to no avail. All functions which operate at
the drive level show 1gb spare and all functions which
operate at the folder level would indicate plenty of
space.

My guess is that some large files that I have deleted
(i.e. too big for the recycle bin) have not really been
been deleted.

Can anyone suggest how I actually get rid of these files
as I cannot find them.

I know I could format the disk but I am trying to avoid
this as unless I know the cause of the problem I will be
doing this forever.

Thanks in anticipation

Brian

Do a google for TreeSizePro (Jam Software?) - a nice little shareware
utility that will show you a lot more than explorer itself does. It may help
you find the culprits. Be aware that your pagefile takes up a lot of space -
and if hibernation is enabled, that does it too....

Hi Richard

I am using Norton System Works 2003 and that seems to
show the same as explorer, i.e. a full disk.

You have to also empty the "Norton Protected Recycle Bin". Right click on
the recycle bin icon to do this.

This holds files even after you have emptied the normal recycle bin.
