Deleted files & mails come back up again...

The Windows Vista Home Premium on my new ASUS laptop has aquired a new form
of weirdness lately. I keep it updated as the updates from Microsoft come in,
and for about three weeks now, I see the following two erratic behaviours:

Files I delete from my desktop return from oblivion upon the next reboot.
Doesn't matter if I throw them in the bin, clear out the bin afterwards, or
even use shift-delete to bypass the bin altogether: next reboot I have about
a 50-50 change of seeing them pop up on my desktop again. And it seems to
happen somewhere around the time the boot process is complete. I have not
tested this in other directories, but will do so if you think it is relevant.

Second peculiarity is Windows Mail: it resurrects my deleted E-mails, even
if I delete them from the inbox, and then delete them from the Deleted Items.
I claim it is not the POP3 mailbox that is ruining things, because my
cellphone reads that too, and it has no problem with reappearing mails.

It kinda looks like the filesystem reverts to old versions of files at
random, magically resurrecting old stuff for me. I did suspect Allway Sync
running on my system, but will check this right here and now by deactivating
it for the next couple of days, and seeing if it comes up again

Thanks for any comments you can supply,

I've seen this happen on a new Sony VAIO laptop.

You delete a bunch of files, even with the shift key held down, ie not
sent to recycle bin.

After a reboot they all appear back in the folder where they were
deleted from and you can even still open them up.

'Worrying' is a word that comes to mind.

Just to rule out my other suspicion: Are you using Allway Sync on that Vaio
as well?
Because basically, that program is set up here to sync my user directory to
another place for backup.

Not as far as I am aware, I was installing it on a network for someone
who had been using it in standalone mode.

Basically their IT guy couldn't figure out how to get it setup on a
domain, not sure why, it isn't difficult.
So the user had setup a local account in the meantime and was using
that.

Anyway we setup a domain account for the guy and then logged onto the
domain account and then proceeded to copy all his documents from his
local user documents folder into his domain user account documents
folder.

Once they had all gone across we did a comparison check and found
everything to be OK.

So we set about deleting the documents in his local user account
profile.

He wanted to keep his local user account profile for the time being as
he had several programs installed only into this profile which we
didn't have the setup disks for at the time.

Later on he would re-install these apps in the other profile or all
users profiles and then remove his local user account and profile.

After we deleted the files in the documents folder of the local user
we noticed a few minutes later that they had mysteriously reappeared.

So we shut down and restarted..they were still there.

We deleted them again after first checking that we stilll had our new
copies in the domain profile documents folder ( a bit worried that
Vista had just somehow created shortcuts to the new location rather
than actually copied the files, seem's that it hadn't )

Same thing again, after the delete job appeared to have finished the
top level folders were still there, if we browsed into them then they
still contained the files we had just deleted.

So we shut down again and then had another go and on the third attempt
they actually went altogether.

Disconcerting to say the least.

Couldn't see anything running which may have given rise to this.

I'm increasingly being conditioned to expect the unexpected from
Vista.

Hi,
this has happend to me too. I'm running on XP.

After deleting files on desktop, next time i start the computer they
are there. I've emptied the recycle bin, but still same files
reappear. I'm going crazy on this.

Anyone any clue to solve the problem?

I suspect there is a file containing the desktop values that has
become corrupt.
