deleted email with line through it

I am helping a friend move from aol to outlook 2003. My daughter helped her
set up her page so she could receive her aol email through outlook. Her page
looks like my page except when we highlight an email and hit 'delete,' only a
line goes through the email and it stays in the inbox. I have tried making a
new folder and drag/drop the email to the folder but that only puts the
deleted/line through email in the folder but a copy remains in the inbox.
How do we make the email totally disappear? It always does on my computer.
I don't receive my email through aol.com. Is this the difference? Soon she
will have hundreds of crossed out emails in her inbox. Thank you for your
help.

That's the way IMAP works. I don't know if AOL uses IMAP or POP/SMTP or
a choice between them. Look up AOL's Support pages for the correct
Outlook setup.
