Delete takes a very long time

Good Evening,

I am having an awful problem with my Window Xp Pro when deleting a file.
Sometime it can take up to 40-60 seconds to delete even a link or shortcut
on my desktop. Then, the most puzzling part is that it only happens on the
first file deletion, and then all subsequent deletions are fine. Then after
I let the computer sit for a day or two and try the same process again it
will take just as long again. Any ideas? The try is totally defragmented
and all patches are on with SP1a.
