Delete/Resize Partition

Has anyone used partition magic ?
I have a HD with 2 XP installation in the same drive but different
partitions. Both partitions are about 90% used. I want to know if I can
resize the smallest one, take the space from the biggest one. I don't care if
I loose the data from hth big partition, I just don't want to format and
loose the data form the smallest partition.
Does partition magic do that ? Does anyone know about it ? I dont want to
buy and waste my money.
Thanks.

Yes, Partition Magic does that, as do a number of other programs.
Partition Magic is the best-known such program, but there are
freeware/shareware alternatives. One such program is BootIt Next
Generation. It's shareware, but comes with a free 30-day trial, so you
should be able to do what you want within that 30 days. I haven't used
it myself (because I've never needed to use *any* such program), but
it comes highly recommended by several other MVPs here.

Whatever software you use, make sure you have a good backup before
beginning. Although there's no reason to expect a problem, things
*can* go wrong.

I can vouch for BootIT NG - it seemed to work when a version of Partition
Magic I had (admittedly an old version) seemed to screw up the reported
sizes of the new partitions I made....

Partion Magic can resize adjacent partitions. I have used it to do that under 98 and XP.

However, it will NOT erase files. You must do that yourself, before using it.

But, it can format a partition, and that effectively erases all the files, and is faster than the erase command. XP can also format partitions. A short format should suffice.

One caution: XP assumes that the following files are on the C:\ partition, even if XP is installed on another partition. Never erase these files !

ntdetect.com

ntldr

boot.ini

Further, the contents of BOOT.INI must correctly point to the XP installation.
