Trying to free up harddisk space on my portable Compac, I discovered that
C:\windows\TEMP contains no less than 636 files with the extension .PDL
taking up around 900 MB (on a 20 MB harddrive).

I have a hunch they might be some kind of system back-up files, but I was
wondering if I can delete at least some of them.

"taking up around 900 MB (on a 20 MB harddrive)."? How do you do that?
You can doubleclick one of the PDL files and see what happens or click its
Properties to find out what program uses them. PDL files are Project
Description Language in C++ by Borland. If you have that installed, you've
found the culprit. You could always delete all of them to the Recycle Bin
and keep them there for a while and see if any program calls for a PDL file,
then you can always Restore it.
