delete not working

i have a long document that the delete key (just started) is not working in
most of it. new info added after a certain point behaves correctly, and any
new info added where delete is not working can be deleted. in the bad area
all the cusor does is skip over the delete letters/words without deleting
them. it doesn't matter whether done individually or shift/arrow key
microsoft 2003, on xp

Hi Steve

It sounds like you might have accidentally turned on Track Changes. You will
need to turn it off (to stop the behaviour from happening) *and* accept (or
reject) the changes you have tracked.
