Can't remove series of dashes.

I can't delete a very long series of dashes I inadvertently added by leaning
on the keys too long. If I cut and paste to a new document, that dashed line
moves with it. It is not a drawing object. I cannot select it do delete it.
When I hold the cursor over it, the cursor turns into an up arrow and a down
arrow with a double line sandwiched between.

Thanks for help with this very frustrating problem.
