Delete key with a mind of its own

Kokopop. While working on a long document in Word 2007, I selected a
paragraph and hit Delete. Nothing happened. After several failed attempts,
I tried another tack: I selected the paragraph, right clicked and hit Cut.
The text remained there unchanged, and a little box came up to say that “This
is deleted text,†as if that explained something. The only way I was able to
proceed was to copy the portions I wanted to retain and paste them into a new
document, then delete the entire first document. Can anyone tell me what is
going on?

It sounds like you might have track changes turned on. In the status bar,
look for "Track changes". If you don't see it, then right-click the status
bar and click Track Changes. It will now show you the status of track
changes... click Track Changes to toggle it on/off.

As it appears to have been turned on by accident, you'll likely need to
Accept Changes in the Reviewing ribbon tab.

Kokopop Herb Tyson's answer was right on the money. I don't know how the
Track Changes got on, but I am delighted to learn about this. Thank you very
much.
