Every once in a while I get a "Delayed write error" which appears in the
right side of the taskbar. once that happens I start getting write errors pop
up about all sorts of things.

At first this seemed to have no effect on my computer, all I did was hide
the icon and things seemed fine. Now it seems that my computer slows to a
crawl and I am unable to turn off or reset the computer without first going
through 100 error messages. I've been turning off my computer by holding the
power button for five seconds.

Any insight is helpful.

Lots of possible causes..

Would need more info to narrow it down.

There will be some underlying hardware trouble, which ought to be traced
down. Meanwhile, first refresh the drive controller setup; in Control
Panel - System - Hardware - Device Manager Look in IDE ATA/ATAPI
controllers, highlight the first item in it (above Primary channel) and
Action - Uninstall. Close down and reboot for PnP to have another go.
Now in Device manager look for the drive in Drives, double click, and on
the Policies page uncheck 'Enable Write caching'. That will get rid of
the immediate cause without a great slowdown, but should be regarded as
being the 'Band aid' level of treatment
