Delay when starting any program

When I start Internet Explorer, email program
(incredimail), start up "finepix" (digital photo program)
and even opening text files over the network, my hard
drive LED lights up solid like it's performing a giant
task, I have to wait approximately 1 minute before the
task I want is performed. The window will open but be
blank until the minute is up. I sifted through my
registry and took out a few things I didn't recognize as
well as removed any programs that I thought may be
causing this.... no change. I did a virus scan with
Trend and found and removed bkdr.irc.flood but still the
delay is there. Now I've reinstalled windowsXP over
itself and got all the updates again and still no change.
I am not able to get 1 update which is service pack 1
because the updater says that some files have been write
protected and asks if I would like to overwrite these
files anyways. I said yes, it tries to install, and then
says that ssstars.scr is running and cannot be changed or
overwritten. is that my problem file? or does everyone
have it... any suggestions regarding the delay?

Most likely your anti-virus is scanning the program when it opens.....not neccesarily a bad thing, but it does take time...you should be able to shut it off in your A-V options
