delay in error sounds

After reinstalling XP, and redoing all of the updates with windowsupdate,
all of my error sounds have a delay when they start playing. they start
and sound like they try to start repeatedly and then finally play. how can
I fix this?

Neither of those worked. Any other suggestions?

Try reinstalling your soundcard drivers.
