Delay between keyboard and screen

In my Office XP Students and Teachers version of Word, I am suddenly experiencing a delay between when I type letters on the keyboard and they appear on the screen. Does anyone know how to fix this

Since it happened "suddenly", do you know what changed? Something changed.

This is beginning to be a repeating theme and message ... some of the
recent computer viruses do this to Office applications. Check out your
machine for such nefarious software, or otherwise check out what
changed. Something changed to cause this.
