Word 2003 - Typing delays (frequent, persistent)

J

Jack

I notice there are other entries on this subject. The proposed solutions did
not resolve my issue.

I have Word 2003 on an XP-Pro system, all SPs installed. Dual processors,
2.4 GHz, 2 Gb RAM. Windows Live OneCare is the antivirus/firewall
application.

When I open any document, I experience frequent short delay events. The
hourglass icon appears briefly, then typing can resume. Typing results in
delay events. Selecting text results in delay events.

Scans indicate no spyware or adware. OneCare indicates no viruses.

I have suspended the indexing service (cisvc.exe) - no change.

I have turned off speech recognition. Keyboard is U.S. only.

Processor load hits all of 11%. But while the delay is in effect - no entry
can be accomplished.

Thoughts or ideas? (Other than doing something horrific to the machine...)

Thanks.

Without knowing what proposed solutions you've found you might get some
repeats. :)

First take a look in your Control Panel in Add/Remove Programs and see if
there is a listing for OutlookAddin. If you find it uninstall it and see if
that helps with the delays you are encountering.

Ahh, well. Who among us has not hit the enter key dozens of times, expecting
a different outcome in each instance? ;-)

Unfortunately, there is no OutlookAddin; however, I notice I have the .NET
framework, versions 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, and 3.5 SP1. Could all those versions
introduce conflicts? Would removal of early versions help?

Or...are there other ideas?

Thanks!

Hi Jack,

The .net frameworks shouldn't generally cause the issue, although an app that relies on them might. Unlike other products, a newer
..NET framework version does not replace a lower numbered one. You could have a solution that breaks by removing a version, it's
hard to tell for sure :)

Hold the ctrl key while starting Word. Is there a difference?

No, starting Word in safe mode doesn't resolve the issue. However, it does
suggest that it isn't a Word problem, nor is it a problem with any Word
add-ins, I suppose.

So that implies either the system, or some program that interferes. Odd.

Still, thanks for the idea!

Something like this can be difficult to track down, especially if it's not
specific to Word. I encountered a similar issue and it took me months, and
an odd coincidence, to finally resolve the issue which was the OutlookAddin
I mentioned previously.

I'd start with trying Windows in Safe Mode and see if it occurs then.

Yes, I just tried it with Windows in safe mode - and, in that mode, there is
no problem.

So...thoughts on a procedure to track down the problem? I suppose I could
write down every process in each mode, then kill those running in regular
mode which were not in effect in safe mode. That sounds remarkably tedious.
Are there any other approaches that might be better?

Thanks...

Perhaps using Process Explorer can help narrow down your search:

I'd use it while Word is running and when you notice a delay check the
processes for that time frame. Still like finding a needle in a haystack but
maybe it will give you a more "informed" search area.
