Some please could tell me how long it takes (approximatively) to defrag a
149 gb HD?
I started it at 2:00 am and it's just beggining to defrag after file
compression (now it's 16.02)...
Is it normal for it to take so a lot of a time? I must add that the hard
drive is badly messed up (very fragmentated).

Any help would be appreciated
(Sorry for bad English...)

TIA,

Martina

It can take a very long time to defrag a large harddrive

however you also need to have sufficient free space...

do a disk clean up first.
delete temp internet cache etc.
if you still do not have at least 20% free space...
try such things as reducing your system restore points

yeh that is a long time....

You probably should have done some
pre cleanup to remove temporary
files and other garbage so that
defrag wouldn't defrag the garbage
as well.

But you may have other issues for a slow
defrag like one with the swap file and another
with having startup programs using
the cpu at the same time that defrag is needed.

But these are only a few things that can
explain the issue you are experiencing.
and many experienced users can contribute
some tips about your problems as well.

Something that might help with easing
your pc problems is to use program like
systemmechanic.

many experienced users don't
need to use it. But software's like
systemmechanic was designed for
the users who are not very experienced.
It has a bunch of options that analyzes
the o.s..

I recommend to download the
trial and use all of the options provided.
I think that it will help you as well as
show you some things you didn't know
about your pc.

before you do, I would go into
start, run and type msconfig and
hit enter. then disable all
your startups temporarily, then
exit without reboot. Next
check your swap file and make
sure its not set to none or automatic.
Set it manual for a min of 2 and a max
of 1152. This is an estimate and
won't create any problems for your system.
Then reboot.

This will free up memory
and give your pc more power
until you can clean it up.

afterwards you can re-enable
the startups. But only those
that you absolutely need to run
automatically. Otherwise those startups
that don't need to automatically run
can be started by you manually and
when you need them....

Did it, plenty of space avaliable :) (63%)

I think that startup programs were the problem... I should have terminated
all processes, I guess, or reboot in safe mode (I used to do it when
defragging in win98).

I'm afraid of tampering with swap file, since I'm not an exp user...

There's no answer to this question. It depends on how much data is on the
drive and how badly fragmented it is, not to mention how fast your hard
drive and processor are.
