Defragmenting hard disk

Is it possible defragment hard disk on win98(FAT32), 20Gb, and only 1.5Gb
free space? If so, how much time it may take?

About all things are possible. You may not know it, but back in "the Old
Days" when a 10 MB harddrive was large, well we defragged. Have a go with
whatever program you have. Working time is subject to various things, speed
of program, processor speed, spare memory, etc, Have a long coffee. If there
is not enought head room the program will soon tell you.If this is the case,
then unload, any disk packed higher than about 85% is asking for trouble,
slow working etc. Also it depends on the type/style of the defrag prg that
you use. Some programs will work using approximately only 2% of memory.

You need to free up some space, like at least 2GB. How fast it will take
will depend on your processor and ram.

what is try to defrag just with this free1.5Gb, without additional space?

There is no - "like at least 2GB".

MS says you need 15% free for defrag to do it's thing:

The volume must have at least 15 percent free space for Defrag to
completely and adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a
sorting area for file fragments. If a volume has less than 15 percent
free space, Defrag only partially defragments it.

You'd probably get better answers by posting this in
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion.

I think the answer is yes, it is possible. It will probably take a
long time, but how long depends on a lot of things: degree of
fragmentation, disk speed, CPU speed, what else your computer is doing
at the same time, etc, etc.

Best solution: Try it!

What I would do is go into Internet explorer properties, delete temporary
files, then run "msconfig" disable everything in the startup tab, don't
restart when prompted, then disabled virtual memory (Right-click on "my
computer" performance, virtual memory) if I remember, correctly but it's
somewhere in that area.

Reboot, defrag, reenable Virtual memory, reenable everything in
msconfig|startup, reboot and you're done.

I use to do it that way with 98 or ME and defrag ran faster and didn't
restart so often.

Deleting Internet Explorer temp files and disabling virtual memory will
free up some space while defrag works, don't forget to reenable VM and
don't disable it without shutting down everything in "msconfig|startup" or
your PC might not restart correctly.
