Defragment and chkdsk

K

Kris Gillispie

When I try and defrag my hard drive I get a message that
says something to the effect that chkdsk /f has been
scheduled to run on start-up. Defrag then does not
happen. I reboot the computer and chkdsk runs but only
gets through the first of the 3 phases of checking before
it throws a "blue screen of death". The screen flashes so
quickly that I cannot tell what the error was. Needless
to say, chkdsk /f tries to run each time I reboot the
computer and always fails and I cannot defrag my hard
drive. I have the latest SP. I did find a fix, I think,
from Microsoft but it will not run because of the SP that
I am on. Is there something out there that will fix this
that does not require me to unintall all the SPs and
reinstall them?

Thanks for any assistance you can give me.
Kris.

Can you boot up without doing the chkdsk? If so, boot up and then run
ScanDisk (right click on a drive letter and you'll see the option). See if
that can get through all right and then try a reboot.
