i ran defrag, in safe mode....it made virtually no changes, reported no
errors, and after runnign for hours said it was done.

run analyze again, and it tells you it needs to be defraged....and you can
tell by the graphical chart that it does. but why didn't defrag do anything
in the first place?

anyone ever seen this?

thanks ahead

Hi Daniel,

Thanks for posting!

Sometimes, when a disk is not defragged for a long time, it may take more
than one time for defragment to defrag it completely.

You may notice from the graphic slide that the disk is not completely
defragged yet. Some files still contains fragments. You may view this
information from the report that is created after the defragment is done.

This is a normal behavior.

If you have any additional concerns, please feel free to let me know.

so i will keep redoing it, is that what you're saying? cause it barely did
a thing?

Try getting a third-party product called Diskeeper. It will do a better
on-line job and also does full off-line (during boot) defragging. We run
it on most heavy use workstations and all servers and it keeps them in
top shape (as far as fragmentation go).

Hi Daniel,

Thank you for your quick reply.

I am sorry I did not make myself understood in my first post.

The degragment actually do the job till the fragment percentage goes down
to a certain number.

It will regard the job done under that condition.

However, if there is still fragments and you want to make it more
continuous, it can get it done.

This only occur when a partition is not defragmented for a long time or
this is a heavy file server.

It is suggested to run the defragment per your server's workload.

Also, thanks for Leythos' third party defragment tool suggestion. You may
try that as well.

Hope it clear the situation.

The degragment actually do the job till the fragment percentage goes down

Actually, the MS included defrag tool does only a poor job most of the
time. Sure it appears to defrag the drive, but it does not consolidate
directories, does not defragment the mft or page file, and it has a hard
time doing any defrag work on a full disk (as most defrag tools also
have a hard time with a full disk).

In the last 5+ years of using Diskeeper I've come to respect the ability
of it to manage on-line and offline (boot time) defrags, to pack the
drive, even when near full, and to reorder things to make the most use
of locations. It will even properly defrag an offline Mirror or RAID 5
array.
