defrag on xp

Hi, have a question, i do have windows 98 on my pc,
yesterday tried to help a friend with who has xp , tried
to do a defrag on safe mode,i didit just the way i do it
on my system , but it fail, pressing f8 en start , no
resault.It work the same way?.o maybe could be another
problem, pc its way to slow, also got a message saying
that the pc was being used by another ...dont get it.
Just could I get help how to get to safe mode

Hi,

Make sure you press the F8 key several times before the
windows logo appears (i.e. when screen is black).

If you can't get this to work then simply turn power off
before Windows has fully loaded
Next time windows loads it will recognise that it did not
load properly last time and give you the option of Safe
mode.
