I just tried getting the new definitions and it said it
was downloading 5749, but when it was completed...it said
definitions were 5747, downloaded on Aug. 19th so it
didn't stick. What to do now? I was so pleased cause I
thought the upddate "thing" had been fixed...How do we
get 5749?

Please clean your temporary folders (usually C:\Documents and
Settings\username\local settings\temp and c:\Documents and
Settings\username\local settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5)
before performing the update.
Then try once more to update MSAS.

I feel like such an idiot. I shut MSAS and opened it and
the definitions were 5749, so it actually worked the
first time. Thanks, anyway.

You are seeing the appearance bug, where what shows in help, about--is
incorrect.

Restarting the app is one method to get this to show correctly, another is
to do File, check for update again. You will observe that no download and
update takes place, and you can then go to Help, about--and see the correct
information.
