definition update 1.15.2327.4 keeps coming and coming

Since a few days my computer with XP pro is downloading and installing the
Definition update for WD 1.15.2327.4. about 10 seconds after the update there
is a new alert in the system tray with the same update. It goes on and on an
on. What can i do to fix this problem?
The MS Helpdesk is sending me to the OEM supplier, but that is NOT the right
answer. My laptop is running just fine for about two years and all the
updates are in place.

Kind Regards

I agree that the helpdesk should be helping you out with this, although it
is true that they do reserve the right to pass the user on to the OEM
supplier in some cases.

Here's what I'd do:

The general prescription for "stuck updates" of which Windows Defender
updates are a special case--is to download the update directly to the
desktop, and run it manually, and, if that fails, look at the log file
related to the KB number which should be generated.

With Windows Defender, this can be done more easily:

Go to a command prompt in the folder Windows Defender is installed in,
typically c:\program files\windows defender.

type:

mpcmdrun -RemoveDefinitions -All

and hit enter.

Then, visit Windows or MicrosoftUpdate, do an express scan, and install all
offered updates. (alternatively, you can also open Windows Defender, hit
the arrow to the right of the Help question mark, and select "check for
updates."
