Define "compatability mode"?

My page in Word suddenly changed its appearance, and became smaller and
looked quite differnt. I don't know how to cahnge it back, and wondered if
the above is the problem.

Compatibility mode lets you create documents with features that are
supported in older versions of Word; see the help topic "Use Word 2007 to
open documents created in previous versions of Word."

The size of the document pages, on the other hand, depend on the zoom, which
you can change, for example via the View tab on the ribbon. To apply the
default zoom ratio, click the 100% button in the Zoom group.
