"Good question. I was planning a 2k install tomorrow--maybe I can get to it
sooner. I've some thoughts about what this might be--let me do some
research.

Hmm - you're my guinea pig--I won't have a 2k workstation to test with 'til
tomorrow--

is what I think you need."

Bill is exactly right on this. Windows 2000 users will need to install GDI+.
We will have a KB on this sometime this week.

Actually this is for Bill Sanderson as he seems to know what to do. Yes I had
the GDI+ issue and with your instructions Bill have at least (and at last)
installed it all. I did put the dll from GDI in C:\WINNT\System 32 and it
seemd ok. But the castle Icon wont start and displays Error Message
0x800106ba. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling. Tried "change "in Control
Panel Add remove all to no avail. I did have the Beta1 Antispyware but
defender removed this . By the way yes W2000SP4. What a pain . Help please
thanks

This is a new one on me--as will most issues with this new version be, I'm
afraid.

Have you tried control panel, Windows Defender, click here for
support...--repair?

I don't know that it does anything different from the other steps you've
listed, but it is there.

Here's what solved this for me:
Install Microstf Client for Windows in Networking and then start Workstation
in Services.

Thanks, rych--that may be very helpful. I wasn't able to replicate this by
just stopping the workstation service, but I was unwilling to go the extra
mile and remove Microsoft Client in the networking area.

As a POI or FYI to supplement this fiasco:

Suggest that for an error message such as your:

Windows Defender Installer Information
Error message:
This software requires GDI+, Please load the Windows 2000 Security Software
PreRequisite Pack

or something akin to:

Windows 2000 Security Software PreRequisite Pack

The developer should at least be certain that these keywords in some
combination to include:
Windows 2000
Security Software
PreRequisite Pack

Actually triggers an intelligible reply from the Microsoft Knowledgebase

To get a "not found" response from the Knowledgebase for Wording embedded in
an information popup of a Microsoft Software Package - even a beta is at best
"sloppy" workmanship.

Also, Microsoft Update on Win2K does not trigger or list the Defender
Software as available.

Could this be because the GDI was missing from they system in the first
place or something else??

Unzip and place in \winnt\system32 or as appropriate for your system.

I've got Windows Defender installed on 5 Windows 2000 SP4 machines--3
servers and 2 workstations. I'm not sure whether I've seen the updates via
MU or not--can't recall for certain. I do know that none of them is having
trouble updating via the autoupdate mechanisms built-into the program, but
these are small unmanaged networks with direct access to MU and AU.

came across a pc(w2kPro) that had been hijacked by the crapware
winantiviruspro (winfixer) did all the steps to clean it up and decided to
install defender on had the same problem, followed all of the suggestions
here but still would not work..
added these steps:
saved all online help content as txt or mht files for reference
worked offline
removed Microsoft Client in the networking area
rebooted per removal
followed the steps per system config that are located [ here ]:

(certificate stores :)for some reason:) were not being enumerated on this
machine)

re-installed the Microsoft Client for Networking
rebooted
noted i no longer got the defender startup error

would recommend the installation of
Spybot Search & Destroy(safer-networking.org)
and Spywareblaster(javacoolsoftware.com)

Thanks--I'm still seeing a steady stream of like errors--perhaps 1 or two a
week. Now to see if I can actually put your info to use!

note:
unchecking the MS Client for Networks in Network properties for the
Connection to the Internet is a recommended procedure
this will leave the client available for other adapters/ connections. but,
should disable its' vulnerablilities on the web. and not "freak out" the
MSUpdate features
