Defender vs previous antispyware

I decided to replace the previous Microsoft antispyware with the Defender
beta. I notice I don't have a small icon in the tray as in the previous
version. But when I check Windows Task Manager, it shows it's running. If I
click on Start, Programs, Defender, then I get the program and can minimize
it, but not as a taskbar icon. Do I need to start it manually and minimize it
for the full program to work?

No. It does not have a taskbar icon. It runs silently in the background even
when you close the User Interface. Make sure you have it set in General
Settings to turn on real time protections. You can see its running by looking
under porcesses in task manager for MSAScui.exe and MsMpEng.exe. Defender
runs as a system service. For my own convenience, I pinned a shortcut for
Defender to my start menu.

Windows Defender will show up in the Taskbar when it detects a problem. I
downloaded it yesterday and it caught some spyware today. It displayed a
taskbar icon with a red X. As soon as the spyware was removed the icon
disappeared.

Now I have a new problem. I have an icon in the taskbar with an exclamation
mark. When I click on it the message tells me I haven't scanned in 3 days.
When I click on scan now I get the following error message:
Windows Defender encountered an error: 0x80004003. Invalid Pointer.
I tried searching Microsoft for this and also Google, to no avail. Anyone
know what the problem is?

Lou--I think I replied to a different post of yours about this one, so I
won't repeat that. If this is persistant across a system restart, post back
or start a new thread.
