Defender update problem

Windows Defender is telling me to up date as 'Definitions haven't been
updated in 15 days' Yet I have it set too 'Check for updated definitions
before scanning' and seeing as I run a scan everyday its obviously not
updating automatically!

When I do as asked 'Check for updates' manually it says it has updated, but
the reminder is still there telling me its 'Definitions haven't been updated
in 15 days' I've tried it 6 or so times but makes no difference!

I realise this is a 'beta' version and it's free to use, so this is not a
complaint, just wondering if there is anything I can do to resolve the issue!

Regards,

Chris.

Hello sirch345,

Have you tried going to Windows Update and checking for available updates?
http://update.microsoft.com

Also, just go to Scan menu, select Custom scan, select some folders and do
scanning on them. The error should disappear (also the WD icon from the tray)

Hello Engel,

I appreciate you trying to help!

However I am up to date with my Windows updates, on checking that I see that
I have downloaded successfully the Defender's latest updates! The problem is
that the icon in the tool bar (with the exclamation mark) is telling me I am
up to date, but still remains and the home page is telling me I've not
updated in the last 17days! Also when running an automatic scan each day it
now doesn't complete the scan, it says 'scan in progress' but its not doing
any thing!

I also tried your suggestion of doing a custom scan on selected files, but
it made no difference, so I un-installed W/Defender and re-installed it
hoping that might help, but no change there apart from now 52 days from last
checking for updates!

I've now un-installed Defender for the time being and re-installed the Beta
1 version.

Regards,

Chris.

Hi Bill,

I appreciate your reply!
Looking at your link, that explains some of the problems I've been
experiencing (which is good) but how about the scan stopping part of the way
through? as I said in my 2nd posts on this subject 'Scan in progress' but
it's not doing anything! I'll give Defender another try when I have a spare
5mins, but at the moment I'll keep using MSAS. To be honest with you I prefer
the layout of MSAS especially being able to carry out a manual check for up
dates if I wish.

Regards,

Chris.

There is a bug which prevents scans from completing on a good many systems,
but that should result in an error message, not just a hang. I've seen a
couple of posts about scans "hanging" and don't have an answer for
that--except the standard--"Please try the scan in safe mode." which would
obviously be worth trying.

I didn't address one point--manual check for updates.

You can do this in either of two ways in Windows Defender: Help, about,
check for updates or, go to Windows Update and hit the express scan option.

Bill,

Thanks for that, should have seen that myself on your link!

Now I have uninstalled MSAS (using CCleaner uninstall) and re-installed
Windows Defender, I did as your link suggested (
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105) and everything is now working fine
(touch wood) even the 'hang' I was experiencing when scanning seems to have
disappeared so I am really pleased about that!

It appears if I did that in the first place it would have fixed the problem
but:-

(a) I didn't know about that solution before I uninstalled W/Defender.

(b) I hadn't reinstalled W/Defender at that time, so that solution shouldn't
have really have fixed it!

Many thanks for you support Bill.

Regards from a happy bunny,

Chris.

You're very welcome! With regards to b)--the resolution in that KB article
is more broadly applicable than just the premise it talks about--so it might
well have fixed your issue, even though you had not yet uninstalled and
reinstalled.
