Defender-OS compatability

XP SP2 is not available to me because it conflicts with a mission-critical
application supplied by a National security AQUA.
The latest Defender update is only SP2-compatible: does anyone have any
scuttlebut whether there is an intention to enlarge the OS base?

XPSP2 and Windows 2000 SP4, as well as Windows Server 2003, and other newer
variants. It is a native part of Vista.
I don't think you'll see backwards expansion.

There are no plans to change the requirement for XPSP2. We want customers to
be on a secure install which includes running the latest service pack.
