INstalled the new beta of Defender. It wiped out mmy firewall settings, and I
can not restore from Control Panel "Due to an unidentified problem, Windows
can not display the firewall setting"

Am i left without a firewall?

I think that it also did the same for AGW antivirus. Both show up as not
working in the sys tray icon

Hmm. Was the system clean to start with? Knocking over two different
apps related only in that they are both defenseware sounds more like a
malware effect than anything else. Perhaps Defender poked a stick at
something and woke it up? Where was the Defender sourced, i.e. is it
possibly a troj'd or infected copy?

I often find a scenario where XP SP2 can't UI any control over the
firewall for some reason - all settings are greyed out, and it seems
as if some communication layer of sware has fallen over. In that
case, one may be able to force the firewall on via a .REG
