Defender Cannot Install

When I tried to install Defender, the message was "The Windows Installer
Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in
Safe mode.....". However, I am not running in Safe mode and have tried many
times to install, all with the same unsuccessful result. My OS is XP. I tried
to install the installer KB893803v2 but got the message "Setup has detected
that the Service Pack version of this system is newer than the update you are
applying. There is no need to install this update."

Can anyone please advise what else I could do. Many thanks.

Check the above article. It involves editing the registry, which you may not feel able to do safely.

Since this probably keeps you from installing security related patches, you may be eligible for free support from Microsoft:

1-866 pcsafety in the U.S. or Canada.

Elsewhere, call the nearest number for paid support from Microsoft and ask for the free support for security issues, virus infections, or problems with security patches.
