Have found both a XP PRO and a XP Home system that when
clicking on a website link the window defaults to a four
line square. You manually have to make it bigger. Do not
know what caused this or how to fix this. Have not found
virus or adware problem scanning with multiple products.
One of the systems I only use, and I did not make a change
to it that I am aware of. Other than Microsoft updates.
Any ideas on a cure ?

Windows remembers the size of the last Normal IE window closed.
Open such a link.
Don't use the maximize button.
Stretch the edges/corners so that the window fills the screen.
Close all other IE windows.
Close the stretched window.
