Default view of tracked changes (Word 2003)

I thought I understood how tracked changes worked, but apparently not.

In Word 2003, whenever I open a file which has tracked changes, Word
displays it in the Final Showing Markup view. I have tried saving the file
in the Final view, in the hope that it would reopen in the same way, but when
I reopen it, it goes back to the Final Showing Markup view.

I'd like to be able to change my default so that I can open files in the
Final view. I'd also like to be able to send a file with tracked changes to
others, but have it open by default in the Final view, so that they don't
have to look at the changes unless they want to.

Is it possible to do this?

Thanks for your response. I am familiar with that option. However, it does
not work for me the way you describe. I have a document with tracked changes
in the document. I have turned off the check-box. However, each time I open
the document, it still opens with tracked changes visible. Any further ideas?

For your first request, go to Tools>Options>Security & clear the check on
"Make hidden markup visible..." - I trust you are aware of the potential
problems, however :)

As for your second request, this *isn't* a document-specific setting, it's a
global Word setting. Unless you can remotely manipulate the recipient's PC
you have no control over how they have the option set.

Use the Show button on the Reviewing Toolbar to select which - if any- edits
to display.

The option works, just not the way you think. ;-)

If you save and close the document with tracked changes visible then it open
it will display in the same view you saved it, regardless of the "Make
hidden markup visible".

You need to switch to the Final view and save the document prior to closing
it - then it will open in Final view if the "Make hidden markup visible"
isn't selected.
