Default "View" for Windows Explorer and MS Applications

Is there a way ...a setting... that will cause the
default view in XP to be "details" and not Icons?

Open Windows Explorer and configure a folder to the way you wish. Next, go
to Tools/Folder Options/View Tab and select the "Apply to all folders"
button.
