Default User settings

In my network of XP PCs I use the Default user (in the registry as
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT, and in the profiles folders \Default User\ntuser.dat) to
set various things for all users such as the wallpaper displayed at the login
screen, specific settings for programs etc.

However, this doesnt work on Vista - any settings aren't transferred to new
users and the default login screen never changes. I know that Documents and
Settings is no longer used (or is directed to Users) but is there no way you
can edit the profile for a default user on the machine, or set the login
screen up differently?

Most of the settings I've used were by Group Policy custom templates

Hello,

Two suggestions:

1) Make sure the tool that you are running to change these settings is
running "as administrator" - it should either black out the screen and ask
for your permission when it starts, or you will need to right-click it and
click run as administrator. If the tool is a command-line tool, run cmd.exe
as administrator.

2) Instead of the default user folder, try: C:\Users\Default (as you
guessed, this is a new location for this folder in Windows Vista)
