Default Search Engine

As a result of a recent struggle against a trojan, I've lost my default
search engine. Now when I type something in the address bar of IE, I just
get "page not found".

I have Win XP home, and sure would love a tip on how to get yahoo or
anything back! thanks ;o)

Check your system for "hijackware":

CoolWebSearch Chronicles
http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/cwschronicles.html

Run these tools in the following order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder (fix all found)

2. Ad-Aware (fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM but generally fix everything in red)

Important: You *must* seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each
and every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7. When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/HijackThis.exe) is the preferred
tool to use. It will help you to both identify and remove any
hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com/ or
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for expert analysis, not here.**

[Alternate download pages for many of the above tools may be found at
http://aumha.org/a/parasite.htm.]

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?

From Internet explorer go to tools | internet options |
advanced (tab) | scroll down to search from address bar
and make sure one of the ones that allows searches is
ticked if not tick one

I dl'd and ran that, but I didn't get something with options. I just got a
message, was I sure I wanted to make the change to my registry. Did I do it
wrong?

Thanks, I've done all these steps, and removed a bunch of junk things,
nothing really bad tho. I already had Spybot and Adaware, but the Shredder
was new to me, so thanks ;o)

I also tried the suggestion in Kelly's Korner, but i still don't have a
default browser search engine ;o(

Any other ideas?

Kat
