Default Save As Type keeps reverting back to .docx

Since we have only a handful of computers on Office 2007, I've set the
default "save as" type to the 97-2003 (.doc) option. On one of the computers
(which has Vista), it keeps resetting itself back to .docx format. It does it
on the first start-up of the day after the computer's been rebooted/turned on.
I have 6 other computers that have Vista and Office 2007 and they do not
have the problem. (They were all ghosted from the same image.) Any idea why
this one computer is doing this? After we re-set it for the day back to
97-2003 (.doc) it holds that correct setting for the entire day. But, re-sets
itself upon start-up.
So odd.

Something like this is usually an indication that the setting isn't being
retained in the Registry. This could be due to insufficient permissions in the
profile to write to this Registry key. Or (most commonly) the key has been
damaged and therefore won't accept changes when Word tries to write them back.
It could also be some kind of Add-in installed for this particular user that's
interfering. But let's try the "obvious" option, first:

You might try renaming the DATA key for this user
(HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data I believe), then starting Word,
changing the setting, working with a document (so that Word realizes there are
things that need saving), closing then restarting Word again. Does it stick?
