I've never set up a password and have never needed one.
But when I turned on my laptop this morning, it's asking
for one (no idea why, I've changed nothing). I tried just
hitting the "enter" key, but it won't work. Is there a
default XP password? or any way to get around it? Also,
my CD-rom has been broken so I can't reinstall. Thanks in
advance for any help.

WHich user level did you create for the login that you have been ask for password
If its limited then XP has any way a default Administrator passowr which is created and for sure XP do not provide Default password for user account otherwise it will nebr be possible for you to hand thos

Try to login with build in Administrator user with no password if succeed, the go to control panel and administrative tools , go to computer manager, broswe to user and select the user account that was asking for password, then right click on it and select reset password

HOpe it help
