Default "From" address

J

jakthelad

I have just transferred to Outlook from Outlook Express and have encountered
teething problems.

When I create a new email and start to enter my name, Outlook automatically
imports one of several of my email addresses which I NEVER use in earnest !!!
Even more of a surprise, it is the only one of my addresses which is NOT in
my address book and was never in or used by Outlook Express. It is perverse
!!!

I think I was forced to use this address when I changed over from OE because
I had to use my ISP address to check the setting until my usual addresses had
been set up.

I know I can change auto-complete to stop that happening altogether but how
can I set my main address (the one I have actually set as my default) to be
the default in the "From" box. Outlook must pick up that wrong address from
somewhere so can I not put the preferred address there instead?

Err why and where are you entering your name?

A new email address automatically uses the default email account.
If you want to change the account that the message is sent from click the
Account button in the new message window.

Version of Outlook?

Why do you think you need to insert an address into the From field? That's
only necessary if you want to 'send on behalf of' another address - Outlook
defaults to your default address in tools, accounts.

Thanks to both Gordon and Diane, but with respect, that is exactly what is
happening. I'm using Outlook 2003. I have just done it again.
I clicked on New Mail Message and when the dialog opened, began to write my
email address in the From box. Immediately a drop box opened with choices
opstensible from my address book, but the one for me is not in my address book
and is not the default set up in tools accounts.
I suppose I could remove the one I do not wish to use; would that be a good
idea to start with? I would probably need to add it back later as it happens
to be the address associated with my ISP and I would use it as a fall back in
emergency.

Did you read Diane's reply?
You don't NEED to put your email address in the From box.
WHY ARE YOU DOING IT?

That's what they're trying to tell you. You do not need to type anything in
the "From" box unless you want the recipient to think it's from another
address. The reason your default address isn't in the list that comes up is
that it doesn't need to be. It's what appears in the "From" field if you
don't type anything else.

I don't know about Outlook 2003 but in 2007 the "From" field is hidden by
default. The reason for this is so that it doesn't cause exactly the
confusion you seem to be experiencing.

Ok thanks Rojo, I think the message has arrived in my thick skull at last. I
needed it spelled out in single syllables !!
The From box like the Bcc was hidden by default but my habit is to display
them both as I do use about 6 different email addresses for different
purposes, and the box is necessary for that. But none of those I use is that
of my ISP !

I will return and try without filling the From box.

No it's NOT! If you want to send from a different address than the default,
click on the Account Button (located under the Send button in the New
Message Window) and change the sending account there.

The From field is useful only in an Exchange environment. It is not used to
send from another address when you use non-Exchange accounts. The Accounts
button is for changing the sending address.
