"Default for new objects" is not working

On a slide I click the text box icon on the drawing tool bar and type eoeugf
or something. The text box is completely transparent and borderless. I format
the text box so it has a white background and a black-line border. I click
"Defaults for new objects" and click "OK". Then I do another text box. But
this new text box is still completely tansparent and borderless. I type
oawuwfr or something and click outside the text box. It is still completely
transparent and borderless. How do I change the text box defaults so it
always comes up with white background and black line borders?

Default settings for text boxes don't include the fill and line. However, you
can create your first text box, select the Format Painter tool (looks like a
paint brush) click on the formatted text box and then click on the one you want
to format identically.

That's true.

However, if you set your text box with the line and fill and use the
right-click Set Autoshape Defaults, you can then use a rectangle (as opposed
to a textbox) to create your textboxes, and they'll have the line and fill.
