default font

how can I change the default font so that when I open Word from the icon I
get the font I want?

If you are using Word 2007 you want to modify the Document Defaults rather
than the Normal style. When you modify the Normal style you can also
introduce various style bugs, namely table style bugs. The "fix" for this is
in Word 2007 and the Document Defaults. Unfortunately in previous versions
these issues remain.

Regardless of the version, in the Font dialog box,
make your font selection and then click the Default button at the bottom and
confirm the change.
