Dear Jonathan,

I'd appreciate you revisiting our previous thread :

In essence:

- Loads of people with UPNP routers seem to have problems making voice work
with MSN Messenger 6.1

- My tests suggest that it is not necessary to install the UPNP / IGD
Windows XP components as my Solwise 715 UPNP router seems able to open ports
for MSN Messenger video just fine, and indeed, is opening 4 ports in
response to attempting (but failing at) an MSN Voice conversation. If the
router is opening the ports already, why do I need the UPNP stuff in WinXP?
(Either with or without the UPNP stuff it doesn't work - suggesting
installing it is a route I have already explored exhausively to no benefit!)

- Most of us are already doing the stuff you recommend - no firewall, seeing
that MSN Messenger thinks its going through a UPNP router on the Connections
tab etc..

Personally I think it's about time someone at Microsoft started treating the
problems people are having with this software more seriously. As so many
people are having the problem, surely it should be recognised as a problem
and cannot be too difficult to replicate in your testing labs? Blame the
router? Well, I concede it is possible, but there aren't that many UPNP
router makers out there - why not work with one to see who's 'fault' it is
and publish the findings? My feeling is that there is more that the
software could do to work better. After all, most people who say they have
big problems with MSN Messenger say that Yahoo Messenger works just fine.
As it does for me.

So why is that, Jonathan? Here's a chance to get some good PR for Microsoft
for a change - why not take it? MSN Messenger has the potential to be the
best Messenger around, but only if it works properly. Please fix it, eh!

Still no response from Mr Kay about MSN Messenger voice not working over
UPNP routers!

I posted a question about this to my Solwise router forum too - check out
the answers Jonathan! Still think there's no problem?

Maybe all us users out here are idiots and the product is fine? Duh!

And to anyone out there reading this posting, why not click on your 'Reply
to Group' button and just add "Me too" if you are having voice problems with
MSN Messenger? Maybe if enough people rock Microsoft's boat they'll try to
do something about it!

me too AllI did was upgrade to 6.1 and no voice.( have
not checked any other features)

Works perfect here on two computers. (Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger
6.1). So, I would suggest some strong looking at your configurations.

What about us that do not use a router? I used Win Messenger 4.7 wit
voice for a long time. I purchased a new system and at the same time
installed a Linksys router to network with my older system. That wa
the end of voice. After reading all the posts and doing the suggestion
to no avail, I removed the router, then reformated the hard drive on m
new system, installed Windows Home XP from scratch,(loaded no othe
programs), downloaded ALL updates, downloaded messenger 4.7, connecte
directly to my ADSL modem and still no voice. Installed messenger 5.0
still no voice. So what is the answer to that? Is one of the XP update
preventing voice from working? It can't be my router as I removed i
before I reload XP Home.
