MSN Messenger 6.1 & Linksys Router

Hi,
I am having the same problem as the previous post.(Messenger 5.0 & Linksys
Router) however I am running WinME and Messenger 6.1. I have the same
router(BEFW11S4) with updated firmware (and current version of messenger)
and my UPnP enabled. I see the Linksys icon in My Network folder. I also
have Norton Firewall installed. When trying to initiate voice, the other
party accepts but then voice automatically ends. I have tried disabling
Norton Firewall (that used to work when I was on a dial-up service) and also
tried connecting directly without router. I still can't get voice. In the
Port Forwarding section of the router, I have several custom applications. I
have ports open for MSN messenger obtained from somewhere (cant remember
where at the moment). I have tried everything but could be I am missing
something. Can anyone please help??
Thanks in advance,
Dee

I had a similar problem until I changed the third octet
of the router's ip numbers. I had to change it because
of a conflict with a client's VPN. By default it's LAN
IP Address is 192.168.1.1 I changed mine to 192.168.0.1
It cleared the problem with the VPN conflict I had, and I
could do voice and exchange files again. Also I could do
netmeeting from behind my firewall.

I question your using both the NAT firewall in your
router and a software firewall on your machine. I know
some people think you can't be too safe, but software
firewalls do slow your machine down some. I'm only
running the one on my router at this time. Just
curious. :)

Hope that helps,

Bob

Bob,
Thanks for the reply. I will try that. I assume I just go into the "setup"
tab on the router page and change it, then click apply. I also didn't
realize I didn't have to use an additional firewall. I guess that is why I
have received no pop up alerts since installing the router.
Thanks again,

Dee

Dee,

I have a Linksys router as well, and had problems where
the other person couldn't hear me. After hours on the
phone with Linksys, it simply was the UPnP
Services...make sure it is enabled. That might be the
answer to your problem. I also concur with the other
person who questioned your software firewall program. Not
necessary. Can cause more problems with communications
than it is worth.

Thanks all,
I have enabled the UPnP already and changed the routers address as Bob has
suggested but tried today and at least this time I get a "connecting to
computer". But it still ends the conversation. I also have disabled my
Norton Firewall as I didn't realize that the router provided one... I will
be checking the other link and seeing what else Linksys suggests.
Thanks,
Dee

Thank you very much. I followed the instructions you gave Ray and I now have
voice. I appreciate the help all have given me.
Thanks again and Merry Xmas
