This is further to my initial post "can't edit information in database".
Please excuse my lack of intelligence with computers as I explain my
situation in more detail in hopes that you will be able to help me.
I intially created my database through Word as we were doing a mass mailing
which would indicate to our clients that we were moving.
In the event that we have new clients, they get added to the database and
sometimes I am required to add a new field (i.e. I may have originally set up
the database to include the client's home and work number, but then a new
client arrives with a cell number as well).
Although the database is an Access file, I usually edit any pertinent
information through Word as this is where I have created an application form
and so I find it easier as I will print up the application form and add it to
the client's file. In this case, I would open up my document, click on the
icon "mail merge recipients" and then click on "edit" and then "add new
entry" or "customize" in the event that the particular client has additional
information of use to us that I want to add to the fields and didn't already
exist.
We also use approximately 100 or so standard letters created through Word on
a daily basis through which we correspond with clients or other companies.
In this case, I would open up the Word document, click on "mail merge
recipients", then click "edit", then click "find entry" to look up the
particular client so that my document will automatically update itself with
the information pertaining to that client.
I ran into a problem when I was adding a new client to the database and some
new information as well which required me to customize the entry. While I
was trying to add a new field, something went wrong. Word shut down and when
I opened it up again, I was unable to "edit" again. The icon is faint.
Now, I can update the information through Access, but that doesn't work well
for me when I'm trying to find an entry in order so that my Word document
updates itself accordingly.
I'm not entirely sure, but prior to all of this happening, I decided to
create a replica of my database as there are other users on this computer and
I don't want their stuff linked to the master in the event they make
mistakes. I was playing around with the security feature on the master, but
am not aware that I did anything to disrupt the process. Aside from which, I
didn't have these problems until days later.
