Dead USB Port?

All of a sudden, the PC (and Power Chute software) doesn't recognize a
connection to the battery. One of the troubleshooting suggestions was to
try another USB port on the computer - that worked.

Now I'm concerned that the previously used USB port is no longer
functioning. Is it possible for a single USB port to burn out or just stop
working?

Thanks.

I've had that happen in a USB hub before. After a lightning strike, every
other port was "out." Haven't had one go out on a desktop. Have you checked
internally to see that the connector from the motherboard to the ports (if
a front connector) is still securely fastened? Or tried other USB devices
in the "bad" port?
