hi, if my harddrive is dead, is it still possible to
salvage whatever is left on it? meaning, is there someway
to copy the files from the old hard drive into a new one?
and by dead, i mean the harddrive still loads up, but it
just freezes at the windows logon screen with nothing but
the blue background and the windows logo. thanks for any
help

Can you boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key during startup? If
so, back up your stuff from there before proceeding with repair options.

If the drive can be seen in the BIOS, you probably can get data off it.
Try slaving it in a working XP system and see if it appears in Windows
as another drive. If yes, then just copy the files over. If you can't
get the working Windows to see the drive or even boot, you can try
booting with Knoppix (a Linux distro that runs from cd). If Knoppix
sees your old drive, it should be able to pull the data off and burn it
to a cd-r. This latter method assumes a computer with two cd drives,
one of which is a burner.

After I did that it booted up with a screen with scripts
that looked like the following....partition 2.sys

When the entire screen fills up with this error message
then it goes to the black screen with safe mode in all
four corners...Any ideas...

Thanks again!
