Dead Antispyware?

Guest

I used to use MS Antispyware Beta1 and it seemed to work fine in my Windows
XP. Recently, it does not work at all. When I launch Antispyware, it takes
awhile to show the first screen. It only shows the menu at the top but
nothing is in the main window. If I click Settings in Options, it shows
everything but nothing happens when I click the "Run Scan Now" button. I
checked Windows Task Manager after I clicked Run Scan Now. The Task Manager
showed that the CPU was idle. It means nothing was happening, I guess. I
removed Antispyware and re-installed a couple of time and the results were
the same. Does anyone know how to fix the problem? Thanks

Could you uninstall again, but also delete the Microsoft AntiSpyware folder
at c:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware. Restart the system and reinstall
Microsoft AntiSpyware to a non-default location such as c:\msas. Also,
restart your system in safe mode, log open Microsoft AntiSpyware, on Spyware
Scan Page, choose Scan Options > select Full System Scan > Check the boxes
below > click Run Scan Now.

Another way of doing it is by disabling your antivirus program especially NIS
during your installation (clean installation after completely removing as
suggested by Andre). During your update, you should also disable your
antivirus program. It may be risky but it seems the newer version has a
conflict with antivirus.

Thank you for your suggestions. I had the same problem when I followed your
instruction. Any other suggestions? Thanks.

Try these two solutions:

You can repair Windows AntiSpyware using Add or Remove Programs in Control
Panel. Click Microsoft AntiSpyware and click Change. Click Next, and then
click Updªte.

Then, try these steps:

1) Open up a command prompt (start -> run -> type in -> command)
2) Type in the following "regsvr32 msvbvm60.dll" (without the quºtes).
3) Close and re-open Windows Defender.

You can go ahead and do both of these--neither has any downside risk--and
see if that does the jºb.

Let us know whether it does, or nºt!

Sometimes, you have to try 2 o 3 times with WD, in order to stick the
selection, try.

Thanks for your suggestion. It still showed the same problem after I tried
what you said.

I will describe my problem again in detail. When I launch AntiSpyware, the
program seems to look for missing files or something since it takes much
longer time to pop the first window (When it was OK before, it popped the
window right away). The window has menu at the top without any contents in
the main section. It does not show three selection icons on the top right
side either (I think it used to show three selection icons before). When I
click Settings in Options menu, it shows everything in the main section
including three selection icons at the top. When I select Spyware Scan, it
shows Run Scan Now in the main section. When I click Run Scan Now, it
attempts to do something but goes back to the first window and nothing
happens. If I check Windows Task Manager, it shows that the system is idle.
I guess Spyware Scan didn't start.
Thanks much.

Hello Joon,

you may try this:

look in the folder:
c:\WINDOWS\Installer\
for the file: gcasSWUpdater.exe
delete the folder with the 3 files in there and do a new install.
Workt for me with a other install problem.
